[Phonecall from Delaware] Tuesday 13th November, 2012.

[CALL STARTED 18:29]

FLETCHER HADLEY: Hello?

JAMES WILLIAMS: Is.. is this Fletcher?

[PAUSE]

FLETCHER HADLEY: Who’s this?

JAMES WILLIAMS: Can I speak to my daughter, please?

[LONG PAUSE]

FLETCHER HADLEY: Yeah, hang on.

[LONG PAUSE, PHONE EXCHANGES HANDS. THERE’S A SOFT UTTERANCE OF ‘IT’S YOUR DAD’ THAT CAN BE HEARD.]

DYLAN: Hello?

JAMES WILLIAMS: Evelyn?

[PAUSE]

DYLAN: Hi, Dad.

JAMES WILLIAMS: How are you?

DYLAN: I’m.. good. Good, yeah.

JAMES WILLIAMS: And Fletcher? That was Fletcher who answered, wasn’t it? Your boyfr—

DYLAN: No. He’s not my—he looks after me, okay?

[SHE MOVES AWAY FROM THE RECIEVER: ‘NO. IT’S FINE. IT’S OKAY. I’M OKAY.’. RETURNS WITH A SIGH.]

JAMES WILLIAMS: Sorry, I didn’t mean—

DYLAN: He’s good, too.

JAMES WILLIAMS: Oh.

[LONG PAUSE]

DYLAN: Why are you calling?

JAMES WILLIAMS: I wanted to ask what your plans for Thanksgiving are?

DYLAN: I don’t know. I don’t really celebrate it. We’ll just maybe… I don’t know. Why?

JAMES WILLIAMS: Would you be interested in coming home? Not just you, Fletcher could come too.

DYLAN: I don’t—look, I know it’s all over. Thank you for giving me the papers, okay? But it doesn’t change anything. I—

JAMES WILLIAMS: I know it’s over too, Evelyn. Which is why I wanted you to meet—

DYLAN: Please stop calling me that.

JAMES WILLIAMS: It’s your name. You’re my daughter and it’s the name we gave you.

DYLAN: Meeting. You said meet. What do you mean?

JAMES WILLIAMS: Well, I—

DYLAN: What do you mean?

JAMES WILLIAMS: I met someone.

DYLAN: You did what?!

JAMES WILLIAMS: Must you sound like such a child?

DYLAN: What do you mean you met someone? Like a friend? A famous person?

JAMES WILLIAMS: I think you know fine well what I mean.

DYLAN: [VOICE RISING] But. But what about—what do you mean you—what about Mom, Dad? What about her? So, she gets forgotten about? Is that it? Just because I kill a guy and it’s all over means she gets forgotten about? What about Mom?!

JAMES WILLIAMS: Evelyn, please. She’s been dead thirty years! How many times do I have to say I’m sorry. Do you honestly expect me to be alone for the rest of my life? You’re moving on, but I can’t?

DYLAN: No! You don’t! You don’t ever forget about her! You weren’t there, remember? You weren’t there for her, you weren’t there for me. You don’t even know what I’ve been through the last year, you—and I’m just—why can’t you just—

JAMES WILLIAMS: You’re acting like a child, Evelyn. We did not bring you—

DYLAN: [SHOUTING] Well, you didn’t bring me up at all!

JAMES WILLIAMS: Evelyn, plea—

DYLAN: Get lost.

[CALLED ENDED 18:37]

[CALL STARTED 19:54]

JAMES WILLIAMS: Hello?

[SILENCE]

JAMES WILLIAMS: Hello? Anyone there? Evelyn, is that you?

DYLAN: … Does she make you happy?

[SILENCE]

JAMES WILLIAMS: Yes.

DYLAN: Like Mom did?

[SILENCE]

JAMES WILLIAMS: No one can make me happy like she did.

[SILENCE]

DYLAN: I’m glad you’re happy.

[CALL ENDED 19:56]
